What to Do If Your Diamond Comes Loose
What to Do If Your Diamond Comes Loose

In a perfect world, the diamond in your ring never comes loose. Should the unthinkable happen, however, we’ve got you covered with the steps you can take to not only handle the situation but prevent it from happening again.

What to Do If Your Diamond Comes Loose

Wear Smart

While almost all engagement ring settings are designed specifically to hold diamonds, this, unfortunately, does not always translate to having a center stone that is safe and secure. If you are someone that works a lot with their hands, consider taking off your ring and putting it in a safe place while you do. A few other ways you can wear your engagement ring smartly is to take off your ring and put it in a safe, preferably same, location any time you’re working out, putting on lotion or makeup, washing dishes, or using chemicals.

Act Smart

As soon as you notice your diamond is loose, take it off. Whether you notice it while twirling your ring on your finger or meticulously cleaning it, stop what you’re doing and secure the ring in a box where, just in case the diamond does fall all the way out, at least it is contained. In the case that you are cleaning it yourself, make sure you’re using a cleaner specifically designed for diamond jewelry and a soft brush or cloth. If you notice a loose stone while cleaning, do not attempt to tighten it yourself. Contact a professional jeweler and take it in as soon as possible to have the prongs tightened. Should the diamond have fallen all the way out, the jeweler will be best equipped to handle the situation at little to no cost.

Ask Smart

If you didn’t have an insurance policy when you received the ring, inquire about one now. In spite of the fact that rings are designed to hold diamonds, no setting is completely foolproof, and taking out an insurance policy on your ring is the surest way to protect your investment.

Ask about professional cleanings and make sure you schedule for every six to twelve months. Cleaning your ring yourself can actually be rather risky, especially if you have an antique ring or solitaire setting. A trusted jeweler will not only clean your jewelry with the appropriate cleaner and brushes, they will tighten each diamond after cleaning. In the worst-case scenario that the diamond will not stay secure after having the prongs tightened, inquire about having the stone reset entirely. Most trusted jewelers will quote based on size and cut of the stone and number of prongs needed to ensure your diamond stays where it is. Remember there is no foolish question, except the questions you don’t ask, about the safety and security of your diamond.
