How to Choose Your Wedding Day Jewelry
How to Choose Your Wedding Day Jewelry
So, you’ve said “yes” to the dress; now, you have to choose the right jewelry to make that “yes” even louder! Sometimes this can be more stressful than dress shopping. It means not only striking the balance between personal style and instinct, but also ensuring the jewelry doesn’t compete with the dress for attention. And for many of us, we only get one shot at our wedding-day look, so the pressure is on to “get it right”. Not to worry – we’ve compiled a few tips for choosing the right piece(s) for your big day.

Baseline: Your Unique Style

Consider the jewelry you wear on a daily basis. What do you feel most comfortable in? Start there when it comes to choosing your wedding day pieces. If you’re not a dangly earring gal, it’s probably not a great idea to let your wedding day be the first time you throw on a pair of chandelier earrings. If you feel most at home rocking a pair of studs, you can’t go wrong with a diamond pair. Prioritizing your own style over what’s trending ensures no regrets. It’s more than fine to incorporate something borrowed, something blue, or that heirloom your grandmother would love for you to wear, but do not be swayed by others’ opinions. Choose pieces that make you feel the most confident.

Balance: Complement, Don’t Compete

A lot of time, energy, and money went into the dress decision because, in many ways, the dress is the star of the show. You want your jewelry to showcase that stardom, not steal the spotlight. Therefore, how your dress is cut, the material, and style will all play a large part in deciding what jewelry you wear. For strapless dresses, think statement necklace or drop earrings. If the dress is lace or textured, think pearls or diamonds; for heavier materials like satin or mikado, consider a dangly earring or colored gemstones to add light and dimension. Jewelry should also follow the neckline of the dress. A plunging V-neck pairs beautifully with a pendant, while chokers and statement necklaces are better suited for a sweetheart neckline. Be mindful that no matter what neckline and necklace pairing you choose, the necklace should lie on the skin, unless there isn’t any skin showing. If you’re wearing a gown with a high-neck, you’ve just scored an opportunity to show off a bold statement earring or bracelets.

Bedazzled, Bejeweled, and Beads

Diamonds and pearls are timeless and will suit any dress. Put your own spin on it and opt for romantic designs that offer movement or floral elements. If your wedding is more bohemian, layered or textured bracelets offer a whimsical touch. Pair jewelry to match the aesthetic and theme; colored gemstones are a great way to tie it all together. Consider hair accessories, ribbons, and veil as well when choosing jewelry. Although there is no rule that says you can’t wear other rings, your engagement ring and wedding band are typically the focus, but again, if the jewelry complements your overall aesthetic, go for it!

If you’re torn between options, do not stress! Who says you have to wear the same jewelry the entire day? Especially if you’re doing an outfit change for the reception, seize your opportunity to change jewelry, too. It’s a win-win: you don’t have to decide between pieces, and you refresh your wedding-day look.
